I’m a working photojournalist (38 years and counting!) for The Expositor, the Postmedia daily newspaper in Brantford, Ontario.

News photography is both a challenging and rewarding career. I have to think and react quickly to situations, be creative yet truthful in the images I make, and deal with lighting conditions which are often less than ideal.  Capturing the peak action of sports from high school level to Pan Am Games soccer, or slice-of-life moments of people in our community, the audience for my work extends from within our coverage area, to across the country and around the world!

Every once in a while some plum assignments come along, such as a Royal Visit, flying in a Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet and one of only two Lancaster bombers in the world still flying; concerts with legendary acts like KISS, Aerosmith and the Dixie Chicks, or twice accompanying children with physical challenges — and sometimes terminal illnesses — for a one-day whirlwind trip to Disney World in Florida on a Sunshine Foundation “Dream Lift”.

I am fortunate to have been a winner or finalist 22 times in the Ontario Newspaper Awards.

During my off-duty time, my gear gets little rest, as I enjoy shooting a variety of subjects, along with my wife Donna who has developed (pun intended!) a keen eye & love of photography over our 34 years together. We enjoy shooting a good many subjects including pin-ups, classic cars, railroads, and lighthouses, and like to plan road trips to visually-interesting destinations.

I have done a variety of freelance work, including being hired to photograph the City of Brantford’s Canada Day celebrations for the past 8 years; photographing minor sports for Brantford’s Sport and Tourism Department; and have produced images that cover the walls of a Your Neighbourhood Credit Union branch.

I have taught weekend photography workshops at the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, and am currently the vice-president of the Brant Camera Club.
