Rusty City 7.5 8 7 22.5 Leonie Holmes FCAPA Creative Master
J1 Strong textures and colours. J3 Excellent idea and the rust works well with the cityscape. Unfortunately, the rusty texture on the left side of the image is out of focus, which is distracting and detracts from the overall impact of the image. The composition is very nice, but suggest cropping off the left side, leaving only the sharp portion.

Smooth Flow 7 7.5 7 21.5 Andy Langs Creative Gold
J2 This image has done a lovely job taking a long exposure of water bringing lots of drama to the viewer. Its brightness keeps the viewers eye on the water while also drawing you through the image . The water is nicely framed by the rock on either side.

Peregrine Falcon 8.5 8 8 24.5 DP Pat Wintemute Nature Master
J3 Excellent image of the falcon. The wings and tail are nicely spread, exposing all of the feathers. The bird#039;s eye contact with the viewer is good and there is a nice catchlight in the eye. The image appears a little too bright, so suggest darkening about 2/3 stop. The blue sky looks a little washed out. This will be darkened by decreasing the brightness but perhaps should be darkened even a little more to accentuate the blue colour.

Blue Heron 2 7.5 8 8 23.5 TC SPP Carey Hope Nature Silver
J3 Lovely image of a great blue heron. The composition is very nice, the subject is sharp and the background adds a sense of place without being distracting. Suggest brightening the eye a little and darken what looks like a bright halo behind the heron#039;s neck.

Rain Drops On Garlic Scape 7 6 7.5 20.5 Peter Chow Nature Gold
J3 Overall a very nice image. The curve of the stalk is interesting, the raindrops are a nice addition and everything is sharp. The exposure and colours are very good and look natural. The composition is good, but the flower head appears to be cut off. Including the end of the flower head was probably not practical because so much more of it is below the head. However, this makes for a somewhat awkward composition. Tone down the brightest area on the flower head a little.

J3 The chipmunk#039;s pose is very good, but unfortunately the face is out of focus. Sharp focus is an important requirement in nature photography.

Three Friends 6.5 5.5 6 18 John Bunyon Pictorial Silver
J2 This is an interesting trio of subjects and the crop to align them has made for an interesting presentation. However, the skills required to clone the subjects together has not been well done. The maker is encouraged to continue practicing as the skill is desirable and magical transitions can be created when mastered.

Alley At Dawn 7 5.5 5.5 18 Patrick Mohide Pictorial Gold
J1 The light area at the corner could be sharper. As it is, the brighter area draws the eye to the out of focus detail. J2 There is an interesting story in the composition of this image. However the impact is lost due a lack of sharpness and lost detail in the exposure (blown high lights and no detail in the shadows). Perhaps using a tripod may have helped keep the image sharp. Watching the histogram on the back of the camera would have informed the taker that detail was missing and exposure could then be corrected. J3 Interesting composition and nice viewpoint; however, all of the building should be sharp. When making a picture, make certain that you know where the camera is focusing. In addition, the lighting is very harsh, some highlights are blown out and the dark shadows hide all detail in those areas. This is worth trying again in better lighting and with more depth of focus.

Marsh Boardwalk Sunise 7 7.5 7 21.5 Don Poulton Pictorial Master
J3 Excellent composition, interesting viewpoint and nice clouds. Unfortunately, the image appears to be over-sharpened, which makes it look unnatural. This image is worth working on. Suggest backing off on the sharpening, removing the lens flare in the bottom left, reducing the digital noise in the sky and darkening the foreground a little.

Three Over Thirteen 8 8 8.5 24.5 DP Greg Alderson Pictorial Master
J2 This image has a great story and brings high impact to the viewer. Technically it is well done. The exposure is good with details in the high lights and shadows, it#039;s sharp throughout, tonal balance is well done. The presentation in black and white works with the image as does the inclusion of graininess for texture. The black background seems isolating, and perhaps to have included a ghost of "location" might have added to the impact.

Railway Tracks Pictorial Bronze
J1 Too much of the image is out of focus J2 This image brings an interesting story to the viewer but the impact is lost with too little of the image being in focus. A larger depth of field might have been considered. J3 Good idea by the maker and great job getting down low for an interesting viewpoint. However, the lighting is very harsh, ceating distracting shadows and highlights. In order to have more impact and retain the viewer#039;s attention, the sharp portion of the image should contain something more interesting and/or more of the image should be sharp. Next time, wait for better lighting and provide more depth of focus by stopping down the lens or by using focus stacking.
