Carnivaall 6.5 5.5 7 19 John Bunyon Creative Silver
J2 Although there has been some manipulation in the lower part of the image, it still maintains a very pictorial look and may have scored higher in the Pictorial category. samsung SM-A520W 1/100 sec F1.9 ISO 80 FL 3.6
The Climber 6 5.5 6.5 18 John Bunyon Creative Silver
J2 Great concept. The sharpest part of the image is to the left of the main subject. The large out of focus area around and to the right of the climber takes away much of the image's impact. samsung SM-A520W 1/50 sec F1.9 ISO 50 FL 3.6
Northern Hawk Owl 8.5 7.5 7.5 23.5 GPP Pat Wintemute Nature Gold
J3 A well captured image, the subject is sharp and well exposed, with an appropriate depth of field to blur the background. The subject is central in the frame, and a slight crop from the left may provide a little more balance. EOS 70D 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary 015 1/1250 sec F6.3 ISO 400 FL 516
Aurora Borealis Nature Silver
J2 Good effort. The motion blur and artifacts take away much of the impact created by the aurora. NIKON D7100 8 sec F3.5 ISO 1000 FL 18
Baby Egrets Nature Silver
J1 image lacks clarity, end of beak and eye is not in focus and if you are going to have such a close up photo the sharpness in the eyes is crucial. J2 Interesting positioning of the two birds. The lack of sharpness on the birds faces takes away much of the image's impact. EOS REBEL T5i 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary 015 1/200 sec F11.0 ISO 100 FL 562
American Robin 8.5 7 8 23.5 GPP Jim Thomson Nature Gold
J1 As per ethical photography rules:"Close-up photography of nests of newly born birds and mammals is to be avoided as the process disturbs the nesting area and usually puts the young animals at risk. Shooting from a distance via a long telephoto lens is recommended for this type of photography." Hopefully a very long lens was used here.
Lasalle Marina At Sunrise 7.5 7.5 7.5 22.5 Geoff Dunn Pictorial Gold
J2 Rich and pleasing colours. It is hard to tell what aspect of the scene first caught the photographer's attention (the boat, bridge, clouds). Try simplifying the composition to focus on the most important elements. EOS 5D Mark III EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM 1/20 sec F13.0 ISO 200 FL 32
Highland View 6 5.5 6.5 18 James Hamilton Pictorial Gold
J2 A pleasing pastoral scene with foreground, mid-ground and background clearly defined. A couple of processing issues take away from the over all impact. The halo along the ridge line is distracting as is the small blurred area in the lower centre. EOS M5 EF-M18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM 1/320 sec F5.0 ISO 100 FL 24
Christmas Hibiscus Pictorial Silver
J1 close ups need careful focus on the main subject. Not much of the flower is really much in focus here. The stem especially must be in focus and it is not. Also the area surrounding image would be better more blurred so that it doesn't distract form flower. Use a lower aperture(f2) and focus on the stamen. Focus stacking helps if you really want the entire flower in focus while leaving the green leaves blurred. Composition is good. J2 Flower nicely placed in frame. Red flower works well against the dark green background. The lack of sharpness anywhere on the flower significantly reduces the image's impact. samsung SM-A520W 1/30 sec F1.9 ISO 200 FL 3.6
Escape Hatch 5.5 7.5 7 20 Linda Pickrell Pictorial Silver
J1 why is 3/4 of image blurred? is the sign really the only major part here? This image has great potential with good leading lines leading to a very interesting interior yet maker chose to hide all that and focus on the sign. Viewer needs to see how sign is relevant to rest of image. EOS 60D 15mm 1/250 sec F2.8 ISO 200 FL 15
Kiwi 6.5 7.5 6.5 20.5 Geoffrey Skirrow Pictorial Gold
J2 Well exposed with good sharpness throughout. At first glance it appears that the bottom of the kiwi is cut off. This is accentuated by not having any rim light on that side of the fruit or (because of the black background) being able to see the edge of the frame. This is where a 1 or 2 pixel light grey stroke might help. EOS 6D EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM 1/30 sec F9.0 ISO 100 FL 100
Passchendaele 8 8 7.5 23.5 GPP Kathy Leisti Pictorial Gold
J1 at first I gave this a 6.5 because I wasn't sure what the maker wanted me to see other then an insignificant flower. BUT then I decided to look up what that title meant, and that's when I understood image. An excellent story here created by photographer. a wider angle lens to see more of the area to the right might help.
Folding Impulsions 8.5 6 7 21.5 Ed Espin Pictorial Gold
J2 A very interesting and artistic creation. The thick white stroke and extra line across the bottom distract from the main subject. Consider a thiner stroke using one of the lighter colours from the main subject. From the club's definitions, this image would likely have scored much higher in the creative category.
Boardwalk Newfoundland 6.5 6.5 7.5 20.5 Carey Hope Pictorial Silver
J2 Boardwalk makes a great leading line. The colour differences in the landscape nicely define the foreground, mid ground and background. The are several spots of sensor dust visible in the sky and the processing has left a fine white halo along the ridge line. Both of these take away for the image's overall impact. NIKON D750 24.0-70.0 mm f/2.8 1/160 sec F20.0 ISO 200 FL 42
J2 Pleasing composition. Bright area on left draws the viewer's eye away from the most interesting part of the image. To hold the viewer's interest, more of the main subject needs to be sharp. samsung SM-A520W 1/120 sec F1.9 ISO 80 FL 3.6
Fencepost Detail 6 7 7 20 Ian Porszt Pictorial Gold
J1 if you want to call it "fencepost detail" you must zoom in closer. As it is there is too much background and the viewer's eye is taken away from main subject to that strong background, beautiful as it is with all its fall colors. FUJIFILM X-E2 XF55-200mmF3.5-4.8 R LM OIS 1/2200 sec F18.0 ISO 12800 FL 200
Coastal Light 5.5 6 6.5 18 James Hamilton Pictorial Gold
J1 the overexposure on the top right is a bit too stark compared to rest of image and distracting - next time take 3 photos one exposing for that area and one exposing for the dark areas and one mid way then combine the 3 in HDR in processing. This would preserve the highlights in that area while giving you a proper exposure for rest of image. There is too much grain in the sky probably from too high ISO. Use a tripod, lower your ISO.
Harbour Moon 7 6 7 20 Greg Alderson Pictorial Gold
J1 if this is a pictorial category I'm assuming this moon is real not added, thus no marks were deducted. (However the naked eye does not usually see that detail on the moon unless it was taken up close with a zoom lens, and the lighting doesn't quite match image.) NIKON D500 1/320 sec F9.0 ISO 5600 FL 210
Golf On Islay 6 6 7 19 James Hamilton Pictorial Gold
J2 A well seen moment. The shadows add interest and give depth to the image. The processing has left visible artifacts which are most noticeable in the sky. The overall lack of sharpness takes away from the image's impact.
Glowing Moon 6.5 7 7 20.5 Elzbieta Piskorz Pictorial Gold
J1 -must get rid of the dust spots (4 showing on the centre left)-place moon off centre-top right hand of image there is a light blue line that is distracting and can easily be removed- image doesn't quite look realistic, moon cant possibly be that large from a photographer standing that distance and its light is very bright in comparison with light cast on water -if moon is added consider blending it better, if its real - well that's quite a sight! (no marks deducted for this) NIKON D610 1/1000 sec F11.0 ISO 100 FL 70
Touched By The Sun 8 7 8 23 Bela Acs Pictorial Master
J1 sun? there wouldn't be a black background and his sweater wont be completely lost in shadow if this was the sun. a better title would be "touched by light". titles are important. However, gorgeous portrait full of impact
Toronto 7.5 7 7.5 22 Leonie Holmes Pictorial Gold
J1 The image is beautiful with the addition of the moon however when adding moons you really have to be careful with the size of moon, its color and lighting. Here the size and color is good but the lighting of the rest of the photo looks like this should be late morning or during day and the moon is not out at that time. This doesn't quite represent a realistic picture. NIKON D800 1/500 sec F6.3 ISO 100 FL 100
